Playing Geologist :)

Field Tripping
So on Thursday, Mrs. Thornton and I went on a field trip to get up close and personal with minerals, rocks, and fossils. It was so much fun! We visited several locations of rock outcrops. We saw lots of sedimentary rocks. Mr. Billy Morris taught us to use a compass to measure the strike and dip of each outcropping. Check out this photo of Mrs. Thornton!

Next, we visited the southern portion of Taylor's Ridge. We were able to find crinoid and brachiopod fossils at this location. Here we are in action. :)

Mrs. Thornton is measuring the strike and dip of this rock outcropping!

I got a little distracted by a butterfly! But I did find some fossils!

We stopped at the Pocket for lunch! Beautiful place to visit!

Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils!

Mrs. Thornton and I are attending a class for teachers pursuing the Science endorsement. The class is held in Rome at Georgia Highlands College. Our instructor is Mr. Billy Morris. He's AWESOME. He teaches like we do! HANDS ON & activity based. We've spent the whole week learning more about plate tectonics, minerals, rocks, and fossils.

Today, we were working with fossils. Everyone loves fossils. We were so excited about it. I actually held a dinosaur bone in my hand!!! (Granted it wasn't like a leg bone. It was a bone fragment.) It was the closest I'll ever come to a dinosaur! I was so excited I totally forgot to take a picture. Mr. Morris was kind enough to share his collection with us. He gave us some fossils that he and his students found on a dig in Wyoming.

Tomorrow, we are going on a field trip to collect our own fossils! Wish us luck! Stay tuned!
