Reindeer Day 2012

Third grade teachers planned a day of fun activities to go along with one of our favorite holiday read alouds. In the story, Olive the Other Reindeer, Olive is merrily preparing for Christmas when suddenly she realizes "Olive... the other Reindeer... I thought I was a dog. Hmmm, I must be a Reindeer!" So she quickly hops aboard the polar express and heads to the North Pole. While Santa and the other reindeer are a bit surprised that a dog wants to join the their team, in the end Olive and her unusual reindeer skills are just what Santa and his veteran reindeer team need.

Students made 2 reindeer ornaments, read the book, watched the video, made a reindeer snack, and completed a persuasive writing activity. For the writing activity, students had to choose an animal they would like to be and write a letter to Santa to convince him to hire them for his reindeer team. Students did a great job and were very creative. We had cheetahs because as you know, they are very fast. There were also zebras, lions, tigers, and many other creatures to apply for the job!

Here's a peek at the reindeer snack!

Holiday Happenings!

Santa and Kids
Third Grade Holiday Happenings!

It’s difficult to believe Christmas is only 16 days away. Our classroom is buzzing with excitement over the upcoming holiday season. I wanted to let everyone know about the fun things we’ll be doing over the remaining school days.

Due to the current economy and other considerations, we will not be exchanging Christmas presents. I am instead asking for a $3 donation to cover the cost of supplies for holiday crafts and activities. We’ll be making a special Christmas present for ourselves to help keep us warm and cozy this winter and ornaments to decorate your Christmas tree at home.

We won’t be left out! Students will receive a treat bag and a couple of presents from me. Rather than purchase presents for me, you may purchase much-needed items for the classroom. We are out of Clorox wipes. Several students need new binders and pencil pouches. So those would be great. We could always use more tissues! ‘Tis the season for the sniffles, too!

We will have our classroom Christmas party on Friday, December 21 at 12:30 p.m. I will need a couple of parents to help set up the room while we are at lunch. If you can help, please let me know. You will find below a list of things students wish to have for our party. You may send in items at any time. I’d like to have everything here by Tuesday, December 18th. This way, I’ll still have time to pick up anything we need.
  •  Cupcakes or Cookie Cake
  • Chips/ Dip
  • Sprite or Coke (Cans would be awesome!)
  • Plates
  • Napkins
  • Individually Wrapped Candies
  • Small toys or treats for goody bags (if you wish)

Spelling Practice

Dear Parents and Students:

I found a great site that may be used to practice your spelling words. Be sure to check out Spelling City! It's an awesome site. Students can choose their list from my homepage. Next you'll choose an activity. Activities include teach, practice test, Hang Mouse, Scrambled spelling, and many more. It's a fun and easy way to practice your spelling skills.

Here's the link to my homepage: http://www.spellingcity.com/GES3rdRichardson/.

Have fun with spelling! :)
