Week 34 Newsletter

Hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day!

Although there will not be homework, spelling words, or sight words assigned, the next couple of weeks will be busy for us. Be sure to check our web log and weekly newsletters to stay informed of events. Now that we have covered all our academic standards, we can relax a bit. We have some fun-filled activities planned including beach day, movie day, field day, and game day.
May 15 will be our field day. Mr. Neal has asked that all students dress comfortably and wear tennis shoes. You may want to bring a change of clothes as the afternoon’s relays include water! I suggest sunscreen and a beach towel too! Snacks and drinks will be available for 25 cents each.

May 16 is GAME DAY! I ask that each child bring a card or board game to school. Examples include Uno, Memory, Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, and Go Fish. Students will teach each other how to play these games.

• May 19 is Gilbert Idol, our school’s talent show. It’s sure to be very interesting! There will be a visit and performance by last year’s winner, Mariah Elam.

• May 20 is the Staff Talent and No Talent Show.

May 21 is BEACH DAY! Bring a towel, sunscreen, and a change of clothes. Flip-flops and sandals would probably be a good idea also! Students will visit several “beach” themed stations.

May 22 is Movie Day! Students are currently earning tickets for good behavior and making good choices. These tickets will be used to purchase movie tickets, popcorn, drnks, and other treats. Each of the four classrooms will host a morning and afternoon movie, with the fifth classroom being reserved for students with poor behavior.

May 23 is the last day of school. First grade does not hold a promotion ceremony. Those are reserved for Kindergarten, fifth, and eighth grades. We will have an awards ceremony in our classroom at 10:30 a.m. Students will receive awards for Accelerated Reading, academics, handwriting, sight words, and many more. We will also be showing a special video compiled from photos taken throughout our year together. I hope you will make plans to attend.

Book Fair is HERE!

What's the best thing about summer vacation? Reading, of course! Now is the time to stock up on good books for summer reading at the book fair. This time the theme is "Take a Ride on Route 66: Our Reading Highway". Mrs. Massey, Miss Jennifer, and Mrs. Burrows have done a wonderful job of decorating and setting up the book fair. It looks awesome! There are hundreds of books to choose from on the shelves and tables. There is sure to be something for everyone. I've got my eye on Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Skippyjohn Jones in the Doghouse. I saw other class favorites such as Clifford, Little Critter, Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, and many others. We are scheduled to visit the book fair each day at 11:00. So bring your money!
