Story Time w/ Mrs. Massey!
Mrs. Massey is the most amazing Librarian in the world!
We love having story time with her each week!
We love having story time with her each week!
This week Mrs. Massey taught us about a new kind of writing. It's called persuasive writing. The purpose of course is to talk someone into doing something. In this case, Tyler is pretending to be a school daredevil (a person who takes too many risks). He has decided that he wants to jump of the school roof (aka "table"). Mrs. Massey asked students what to say to Tyler to get him not to jump!
One student said, "You'll get hurt if you jump!" Another said, "You'll break your head". Both are probably correct. These students were trying to reason with Tyler by telling them the dangers of jumping. Maybe it would work but in this case, Tyler was still going to jump. Finally Chyanne said, "Tyler if you jump a lot of people are going to be very upset and sad." Bailey added, "They would be so sad if anything happened to you because they love you!" These students were trying to speak to Tyler from their hearts. Tyler heard what they were saying and did not want to hurt his friends. So, he got down from the "roof". Mrs. Massey pointed out the importance of trying to persuade friends to make good choices. Ms. Marshall, our guidance counselor, was also present. She said that sometimes as we get older our friends will try to persuade us to try things that are NOT good for us. It is very important that you realize this as peer pressure and stand fast in your beliefs.
Mrs. Massey shared Earrings by Judith Viorst. In this story, a girl tries desperately to persuade her mother to get her ears pierced. The little girl makes incredible promises. The little girl promises to keep her room clean among other things but quickly forgets that promise. My mom (and Mary Poppins) always called them "pie crust" promises. Mom says "pie crust" promises are easily made and easily broken.
The little girl tries many different things to help convince her mother that she needs earrings. Some good and some not so good ways! Do you think she ever talked her Mom into them? Ask you child to share the ending of the delightful story!
Thank you, Mrs. Massey!
Thanks for sharing another great book!

Brrrrrr!
Brrrr..... It's Cold!
Local weather stations are predicting very cold temperatures for the next few days. Weather.com predicts the low for tonight at 23 degrees and tomorrow night at 11 degrees. Please be sure your child dresses appropriately! Dress in layers. Wear a thick coat, not a hoodie! A warm hat and gloves should be worn, especially if your student rides a bus to school in the mornings!

Richardson Review January 7-9, 2009
Welcome back! I hope you and your family had an enjoyable holiday break. It is a new year and we have much to do before our time together ends.
READ to SUCCEED
Your child has the opportunity to earn a free ticket to Six Flags by becoming a member of the Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club! You can read books, magazines, comic books, or newspapers. Your AR books also count towards your reading goal. You will need to start reading very soon! Record what you read and the time you spend reading. Please see the form in your child’s folder. The last day to turn in forms is February 25, 2009. No late turn in will be allowed. Please note the change in date! I made a mistake on the newsletters sent home. Sorry :(January Book It
In addition to the Read to Succeed program, we will also continue our Book-It program. This does not mean you have to read more than usual. You can write down any books you read for both programs. Our goal for January is 10 books! The deadline is January 31.
Here’s a peek at what we will be learning this week!
